VTubers Guide to Bluesky
Disclaimer: This informative guide is written for newbies that already have set up a Bluesky account. If you haven’t done so by now, I highly recommend signing up today via bsky.app to get started! Fediverse users can cross over via Bridgy Fed.
Guide Introduction
It’s important to understand the general culture of it now that you’ve joined the platform for the 1st time. The best way to summarize it is “Block swiftly and often to protect your sanity” from bad actors, trolls, etc.
Although blocks are public & searchable via tools like Clearsky or Listifications while mutes stay private, that doesn’t mean you can’t maintain a curated presence as a VTuber.
Compared to other platforms that you’re most likely used to, engagement usually depends on whoever you follow, reply to, and repost content from while you’re active on there. Posting your content without using specific hashtags and/or emojis isn’t always 100% guaranteed to be noticed by other users after you’ve appeared once in the Newskies feed. Unless you already have a decent following that’s willing to support you after starting over from scratch, your Following feed will feel a bit empty, aside from posts made by the official Bluesky profile.
Some will think that it’s easier to just stay put elsewhere. However, what makes Bluesky different from other social media is the innate ability to curate your own experience. This is mixed together with built-in moderation tools & labeler services run by community volunteers, like the team behind now defunct Aegis, that require more technical knowledge to manage as a user than other site features.
You can always find your mutuals & peers from X/Twitter and other platforms via this completely FREE external migration tool called Sky Follower Bridge.
Another indie VTuber, Arianna Foxton, even made this handy video that shows how to properly use the tool for yourself.

Custom User Handles
You may have noticed by now that some folks have registered domain names set up as their account handles instead of the default one that Bluesky provides to every user. This is basically the platform’s main form of self-verification in order to confirm your VTuber identity.
If you can afford to purchase a domain name like mine, having one is very handy to help make it slightly harder for scammers & trolls to impersonate you on the platform. For more information regarding that entire process, check out this skeet that was posted by the Bluesky team.

Some indie VTuber groups like FanoiaEN & The Bear’s Den even provide their individual members with the option of using sub-domains as handles to signify their association with either of them. Former members are likely to lose their custom handle if they’ve permanently left or shut down the group for any reason.
Community Options
There are multiple available options in regards to obtaining custom handles for other VTubers who don’t belong to an existing group and/or agency of any size.

Samuel from the official Bluesky development team even created an community handle app for anyone who is willing to provide this public service to fellow users. Liger provides vtubers.social in a similar fashion because of Samuel’s hard work.
On that note, Itch.io is even allowing folks to use their sub-domains for Bluesky if they’ve spent at least $10 on the platform to avoid the new feature being abused.

📌 Tip: a fellow indie VTuber, Crystal, is currently running a manual service via Patreon where she provides custom sub-domains as user handles to those who wouldn’t be able to obtain that on their own. Hit her up for more info regarding it.
User Verification
As of April 2025, the classic blue checkmark that you’d always expect from X/Twitter & other social media platforms has officially made its way onto Bluesky.
According to this official blog post, any user can easily hide these badges in the Bluesky UI by going to Settings > Moderation > Verification Settings in order to toggle it off at any point in time.

Beware of any scammers going around while falsely claiming that they are either a Trusted Verifier or member of the Bluesky Staff team that can provide you with one of these badges via DMs or even off-site options like Discord, Telegram, or email.
📌 Tip: It’s unlikely that many existing VTubers (excluding bigger indies & agency talents) will need to apply for the verification process, but do keep it in mind.
Clickable Hashtags
I’ll warn you in advance that a lot of clickable hashtags that you’ll see from other VTubers in their posts often are usually being copied directly from X/Twitter, Mastodon, etc. There are other tags that are used as criteria for specific custom feeds like the VTuber Fightclub feed run by the lovely vampire queen, Bonnicula.

Another thing I want to point out is that some of these trending tags are often used by Japanese & other foreign speaking VTubers. I know many English VTubers have been prone to misusing them for clout in the past. Let’s not make that same error out of mutual respect for our peers.
Pinned Posts
Regular users only had a few options to help them temporarily recreate the feature until pinned posts were finally released onto the platform itself in October 2024. They work pretty much the same as they do on X/Twitter except for the fact that they tend to only appear under both the Posts & Replies tabs on your user profile.
If you are not satisfied with the limitation of a single pinned post, then you’re 100% free to turn it into a long thread and/or continue making your own custom feeds. Using the 📌 emoji, while you’re replying to & publishing ANY posts, will even get them added into this specific feed that Jaz (they/them) made before the update.

Bookmarks
At the time of writing, I’m unaware of the total amount of posts that any individual user can save for future reference via the Saved Posts feature. It’s kinda different from how bookmarks work on deck.blue.

Custom Feeds
Feeds are essentially custom algorithms hosted & built using 3rd-party tools like BlueskyFeedCreator, BlueFeed, or SkyFeed. You can follow & pin them to your user dashboard while using either the official Bluesky mobile app or website from any device.
I often recommend using any of these services to folks like myself who don’t have the funds to purchase their own server for hosting purposes. The way custom feeds work on the backend typically relies upon the combined use of Regex & Javascript. Once you get the hang of using Regex for feed curation, making custom feeds will be a breeze!
Someone messaged us asking how we got the Queer vTubers feed to remove any post with 'nofeed' in it. We have a list of terms that the feed won't post.We use skyfeed.app to build the feed. It's awesome.The filter is just a regex block. A better description of how to read it is in the alt text 🙂

Depending on the tool you’re using, there are certain functions that you can utilize to craft personalized feeds for the sake of curating your posts into one or more places. Examples can be easily found from my Bluesky profile & used as reference material. Feel free to ask around if you ever need further assistance with that. Other VTubers are also happy to help when they have time to do so like Bonnicula.
In fact, I currently run the VSky Custom Feeds Directory that specifically contains a variety of custom feeds & user lists made for both VTubers and their various fans. Anyone is free to contact me via either Bluesky DMs or Discord (@aiyokuchan) to request for their own feeds to be added into it. I’ll usually add ‘em as long as they are related to the indie & corporate VTuber spheres in some way, shape, or form.

Newcomers like yourself can also ask to be added onto the user curation lists that feed creators use for managing theirs such as Queer VTubers, Furry VTubers, etc. Incorporating moderation lists or using a whitelist system for your custom feeds also help to take oxygen away from known GFX scammers who try hard to take advantage of the network just to harass users into paying them for commissions.

Using Alt Text
Alternative text on both images & GIFs is important if you want to avoid alienating any blind & visually impaired individuals from being able to understand any of the content that you’re sharing around directly on Bluesky while they’re using screen readers. There’s a neat toggle in your settings under the Accessibility category that will help remind you to write alt text every time you go off to post something new from your account.
Some folks have been told to avoid writing alt text altogether out of fear that it is being used for training generative AI models, but it’s a well-established practice that predates the current AI hype by like 30 years or so.
If you lack the spoons to write your own, use the #Alt4Me hashtag in your posts. That will signal others to do that on your behalf for FREE! But don’t forget to show appreciation for their assistance. Most people are either volunteers who are willing to help out fellow users or even freelancers in the field of accessibility like Melody Wisp (they/them).
In fact, Melody runs the Awesome Alt Text feed that is meant to show off various images containing well-written alternative text from other users across the platform. It’s also tied to a specific hashtag (#AwesomeAltText) that anyone can use to submit their own content to the feed.

There are also plenty of user made infographics like this one out there. They can help guide you on what to do if you’re willing to practice writing it before publishing brand NEW content. Another good reason for using alt text is that it’s taken into consideration whenever you’re searching for any posts containing visual media of specific VTubers and their mascots.

In the end, not using it at all and/or only posting images with unhelpful alt text will cause your content to be hidden by the Bad Accessibility / Alt Text Labeler for anyone that’s currently subscribed to that labeling service. There are also users, regardless of their following size, who won’t boost posts that neglect to include alt text. This can directly impact the reach of any posts beyond your inner circle.

📌 Tip: You can always use the open-source tool called Alt Text Suite to help yourself with writing alternative text by importing ANY images & screenshots.
Content Labels
Whether you create NSFW works or not, you should absolutely mark your content appropriately. Not everyone wants to see lewd content and we gotta respect that in order to keep the community safe and healthy.
It may be tempting to not mark your content as porn or nudity because of the lack of exposure, but it may hurt you in the long run if you don’t properly mark it during the drafting process. Don’t worry, the right people will find your content!
If your SFW content gets labeled incorrectly as NSFW by the automated moderation labeling service, you CAN appeal the label by giving further context to resolve the issue. However, I’ve heard and seen that it can lead to your original label being removed altogether in some cases.
At the end of the day, it’s also important to double check your Bluesky settings under the Moderation category to ensure that you’re not missing out on anything that you might enjoy from showing up in various feeds because of content labels.

Labeler Services
Each one has a different purpose, but I hope that every labeler service continues to prove useful across the platform itself in various ways over time. Subscribing to labeler services, just like moderation & user lists, is always opt-in!
Users like you and I can only subscribe to 20 different labeler services in total! The limit used to be 10 until the 1.87 update that released on June 26th, 2024.

Video Sharing
You’ve probably noticed that the ability to upload your own videos was NOT an official feature embedded into Bluesky until September 2024. Before then, users could only share the link to any videos that were uploaded onto other platforms.

Luckily, you can even do that via Bluemotion as long as you have an App Password set up for it. There are certain limitations when you compare it to YouTube, but it is still a decent video-sharing platform created by its Japanese developer, So Asano.
The same thing applies to TWO newer video sharing related services that sprung up partially because of the TikTok ban situation: Skylight.social & SkyTube.video.
Videos uploaded directly onto Bluesky will embed better on Discord if you utilize this fantastic tool! There’s even an unofficial video downloader made by its Brazilian developer, Joselito, that you can use whenever you want at anytime.
📌 Tip: Use Handbrake in order to convert videos to fit Bluesky’s limitations.

Anyone who uses Streamer.bot as part of their streaming setup can also take advantage of this feature via an automated 3rd-party integration by Tawmae.

Bluecast is a live streaming app that I found out about through seeing my friend Evan from HIMediaTV post about it on his own profile from time to time.
If you’re looking for another place to broadcast your live videos, Stream.place is an option that’s been gaining popularity as of late.
Starter Packs
If you hadn’t heard yet, Bluesky had introduced a newer feature called Starter Packs that allow you to feature up to 150 different users & 3 custom feeds in one place. Every Starter Pack is meant to be shared using a single link, QR code, and preview image.
You can use them to help persuade fellow users to support a bunch of like-minded folks who are a part of specific groups from around the world. Unfortunately, you need a minimum of 6-7 other folks in order to create your own, so choose wisely!
Today, we’re releasing starter packs — personalized invites that allow you to bring friends directly into your slice of Bluesky! 🚀Update to version 1.87 of the app or refresh desktop to create a starter pack. (It may take a moment for version 1.87 to appear in the iOS App/Google Play stores.)

It’s not possible to use them to curate custom feeds like you can do so with user curation lists, but they come in handy when you’re trying to help uplift folks who may have a smaller follower count. Blocking someone who added you to a Starter Pack without consent WILL remove you from it. So make sure that you have the consent of other users throughout the platform before adding them into yours.
Directory Search
Fellow user, Mubs, created an unofficial Bluesky directory that can help anyone find starter packs across the network. You can also submit your own packs into its database by directly contacting him and/or hitting the “Submit Starter Pack” button.

3rd-Party Apps
Before I forget, there’s also several 3rd-party applications that you can use for viewing the platform on different devices in your possession. The only ones that I can personally vouch for are deck.blue (desktop only) & graysky.app (mobile only) based on my own experiences with using them so far.
The former option has a useful bookmarking feature that’s similar to the one on X/Twitter while the latter supports in-app translations of Bluesky posts written in other languages including English with Google Translate (default) or DeepL (only available via Graysky Pro).
Amazingly cool: @morpho.radiant-industries.space will be (I think? Has anyone else integrated poll.blue) the first Bluesky client with built-in polls in-app! Naturally, thanks to an integration with yours truly 😉

Fans of status.cafe can also use a similar service called kibun.social that allows anyone to cross-post their status updates onto Bluesky whenever they want.
📌 Fun fact: the alien hacker Vtuber and independent software developer, Malooski, created the useful Skeet Poster bot for anyone that wants to log their Bluesky skeets inside any Discord servers of theirs for the sake of convenience.
Social Analytics
If anyone is interested in seeing user analytics about their posting activity & interactions, I highly recommend using any of these fantastic tools:
- SkeetStats – This requires you to opt-in via posting a specific command.
- SkyKit – It gives data based suggestions to help increase your engagement.
- Sky Zoo – This also allows you to check which Starter Packs you’re apart of.

Scheduling Tools
If you’re looking for specific apps that can be used to schedule Bluesky posts in advance due to your busy streaming workload, listed below are several different options you can utilize:
- Buffer – Bluesky announced that they officially support this option!
- deck.blue – Access is 100% based on your Patreon subscription tier.
- Fedica – This service is what I actually use for scheduling stuff.
- PostyBirb – Your PC must stay awake in order for it to post content.
- Postpone – This app is one that I also see recommended by other users.
- Publer – This service allows you to schedule YOUR video content!
NOTE: ALL of them even allow you to include alt text if you need yet another incentive for learning how to write it.
Adult Content
Disclaimer: Minors should NOT be engaging with adult content for their own sake!
This important section is 100% dedicated to the different lewdtubers & IRL sex workers who have made Bluesky into their home within the last year. It would not have become the same platform on the internet that it is today without them.
Because there’s no central algorithm here, we need to uplift and support our fellow sex workers. Follow, comment, like, repost their content! It’s not gonna detract from your own content. Custom feeds like After Dark exist to even help y’all easily see ALL the goods provided by the ones you follow without any other interruptions.
Remember that it’s not a competition – there are plenty of horny people out there who will love your stuff. If you’re looking for specific resources that can help connect you with fellow sex workers, make sure to follow 18+ collectives such as SkyHub. The moderation team of it deserve every ounce of unconditional support!
ALL supporters of sex workers need to ensure that they are paying attention to the boundaries that SWers set with their audiences on the platform. Remember to NOT act like a creep towards them or you’ll be blocked and lose access to their content!
Given that SWers heavily depend on reposts & quote posts alike in order to help them get more exposure & sales on the network, make sure to adjust your Following Feed Preferences so you can also see their content directly from there.
📌 Tip: Sex work is NOT the same thing as mutual aid. Although many BIPOC sex workers are often MA seekers with needs, that doesn’t make them “grifters” either unless there IS concrete proof to actually confirm that specific claim otherwise.
Mutual Aid
Disclaimer: If anyone wasn’t already aware of mutual aid communities by now, then this section will be a VERY important read for everyone just like Adult Content.
Basically, there is a large community centered around that very thing on Bluesky. Their main collective goal is helping each other out with crowdfunding for basic survival needs. This is done by using specific emojis in their posts, curating custom feeds, and so much more. Mutual Aid Void is just one of many related collectives led by BIPOC sex workers, including some folks on the SkyHub moderation team.
Whenever you’re unable to donate anything to mutual aid seekers, it’s usually best to like, repost, and/or quote their posts to help extend its reach. Ignoring their desperate pleas doesn’t change their circumstances, especially in the case of Palestinians who have turned to the platform to seek aid while facing genocide.
Beware of scammers as both Palestinians and other MA seekers have had to deal with impersonators & so-called GFM managers deceiving folks at every opportunity. As someone who has only asked for MA just once during the entire time that I’ve been on Bluesky, receiving even $1 donations mean SO much to these individuals.
For every charity that you choose to support throughout your streaming career as a VTuber, there are often many more folks who don’t receive the same material support because of this capitalist hellscape and its various discriminatory systems.
At the end of the day, humanity as a whole wouldn’t have gotten this far without some form of mutual aid. So always remember to be kind & respect others.
